Recalls seem to be on everyone’s mind these days. The recent surprising recalls linked to trusted brands like Toyota and Tylenol can make it seem as if a product is recalled every day. While in reality, that may not be the case, according to a new survey from FindLaw.com, almost half of us have owned a product that has been recalled.
According to the survey results announced on April 12th, 47 percent of American adults say they have owned at least one recalled consumer product. This is an important finding, as most of the recalled products mentioned in the survey can directly impact the safety of consumers or the children in their households. Topping the list of the most commonly owned recalled products were cars, at 33 percent and child or infant products/toys at 16 percent. The next most commonly owned recalled products were household appliances at 12 percent and pharmaceuticals at 7 percent. Medical devices and “other” products completed the list.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), 465 consumer products were voluntarily recalled by their manufacturers in 2009. Fortunately, when informed of a recall, consumers do take action. According to the FindLaw survey findings, 76 percent of people who owned a recalled product say that they participated in the recall by either returning the product or having it repaired.

Since the CPSC reports that consumer products – both recalled and unrecalled – are involved in more than 8,000 deaths and 14 million injuries each year, there is no doubt that access to knowledge like this gives consumers the power to watch over their own safety.
“Manufacturers and sellers are responsible for making sure their products are not defective or dangerous,” said Stephanie Rahlfs, an attorney and Social Media Manager at FindLaw.com. “When someone is killed or injured because of a defective or dangerous product, a manufacturer or seller could potentially be held liable for the injuries, resulting in a damages award.”
